Hello Laura, tell us…
Could you briefly introduce yourself?
Hello! I'm the owner of For Love of the Moon, a vintage shop with my own in-house label inspired by vintage designs. Alongside my vintage collections, my partner and I design and sew each For Love of the Moon piece in our studio in the southwest of France.
When did you fall in love with lace and embroidery?
Before moving to France, I lived in southern Italy for 10 years and sourced my vintage collections at the local Italian markets. It was during those weekly buying trips that I began gravitating to the tables overflowing with colorful embroidered cottons and lace, imagining what I could do with them. For years I'd had lots of design ideas, and finally an abundance of vintage fabrics to realize them.
Your work feels incredibly poetic and sensual. What inspires that romantic energy?
I love to play with glimpses and little windows into femininity. I've always liked blurring the line and bringing clothing that was designed for the bedroom out of the house, so a lot of what I create is a variation on that feeling… always searching for the right balance of elegance, independence and allure.
Is there an era or an icon that inspires you most?
Yoko Ono is one of my favorites. Not only her style, which I do love, but she always pulls something positive out of me when I reach for her poems, art or music.
At Emzi, we believe a shoe is more than an accessory: it's an attitude. What makes you say yes to a pair? Do you have a checklist?
I don't usually have wishlists of things to buy, so it's usually love at first sight. The shape of the heel, the right color, the quality of the material and the versatility: I like to be able to wear them with lots of different things and through the changing seasons.
You paired our Rossia Gold sandals and Nabbi ballet flats with your summer pieces. What mood did you want to create?
I knew the Rossia Gold would be beautiful with my lace pieces. The shape felt effortless and casual, which I love paired with something more delicate. I also wear a lot of gold jewelry, and I liked the idea of the shoes accenting my gold pendant and rings. I didn't know I needed gold shoes before them! And the Nabbi ballet wedges were the dreamiest shade of blue that I envisioned with my heavily embroidered pieces and white crochet. They felt like a summer day in shoe form.
We feel our shoes and your pieces share the same soul: an eye for detail and a deep respect for craftsmanship. What does craftsmanship mean to you?
Independence, and the pleasure of having such an intimate relationship with each piece we create, from start to finish.
What emotion do you want your creations to convey?
Confidence.
