A leather Mary Jane is a closed shoe with a strap across the top of the foot. The style dates back to the early 20th century. In French, they are called « babies. » What sets them apart from a pump is that strap: it holds the foot in place, which means you can wear a heel without that feeling of sliding forward with every step.
It is probably the most reassuring heeled shoe to wear. When the strap is in supple leather and well positioned, the foot is held but not squeezed. You walk, you dance, you forget you are wearing heels.

Yes, and often better than a pump. For a wedding, a christening, an evening out: a heeled Mary Jane has everything you need. The strap gives hold that a pump does not, and the closed style stays elegant without being severe. In patent leather, it has the polish of a formal shoe.
